On Two Aspects Of “The Gestalt Revolution”

I am an emeritus professor of theoretical psychology at the University Portsmouth. was introduced to Gestalt Psychology as a student back in 1960s. My professor, Tim Miles, knew Michotte and had translated his book on Causality. once showed us Michotte’s remarkable displays perceived causality animal movement based simplest equipment. liked way that demonstrations can themselves play important scientific role study perception. start with Psychologists led me work James Gibson who although influenced by Gestaltists grudging admit it. In fact, have spent large part my long career commenting on, sometimes criticising, radical challenge mainstream psychology. (Some years ago, concerned “friend” suggested took up Scuba diving instead.) Thanks mainly students, been involved research across wide range topics. These include developmental psychology, autism, children’s drawings, “false memories”, speech perception, community care for schizophrenics, old-age care. What, me, holds this together is “ecological approach” we taken these issues.
